MALTA WELCOMES CMA CGM CHAMPS ELYSEE the second NEW CONTAINER VESSEL WITH A 23,000 TEU CAPACITY POWERED BY LIQUEFIED NATURAL GAS

Malta Freeport Terminals today welcomed CMA CGM CHAMPS ELYSEE, the second new container vessel with a 23,000 TEU CAPACITY powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Champs Élysées. is 399.9 m long and 61.3 m wide (24 rows of containers), it is equipped with an 18,600 m3 Mark III LNG tank and powered by a 12-cylinder X92DF dual-fuel engine from WinGD pulling the ships at a commercial speed of 22 knots.

THE CMA CGM CHAMPS ELYSEES joins the CMA CGM GROUP’s fleet alongside the group’s new flagship the CMA CGM JACQUES SAADE, the largest LNG-powered container vessel in the world. The CHAMPS ELYSEES was blessed and officially named by her Godmother Dany Qian, Vice President SSE at Jinko Solar.

The call by the CHAMPS ELYSEES comes only a few weeks after the call by the JACQUES SAADE at Malta Freeport. Both vessels are expected to be joined by another seven vessels bearing the same technology, as one of the steps made by CMA CGM Group towards achieving its ambitious 2050 objective of carbon neutrality.

Today, LNG is the most advanced solution when it comes to preserving air quality. It enables a 99% reduction in sulphur dioxide and fine particle emissions, and an 85% reduction in nitrogen dioxide emissions, going well above and beyond existing regulation. LNG emits up to 20% less CO2 compared to fuel motorization. Both vessels bear a specific “LNG Powered” label that will be recognizable on all seas across the globe.
