Malta Freeport Corporation Supports Prime Minister’s Visit to Medserv

Malta Freeport Corporation had the pleasure of assisting Medserv during the official visit of the Prime Minister. The delegation included the Prime Minister Robert Abela, Minister Silvio Schembri, the Permanent Secretary Godwin Mifsud, CEOs, and other distinguished officials.

The delegation was escorted by security to the Medserv base, where they were given a comprehensive tour of the mud plant, liquefied gas area, and yard operations. During the visit, the Prime Minister and members of the delegation also had the opportunity to meet with employees.

The visit continued at Medserv’s offices, where an overview of operations was provided and the Prime Minister interacted with staff. The visit concluded with a meeting held in the boardroom.

Malta Freeport Corporation was pleased to support this visit, facilitating coordination and ensuring the smooth running of the engagement in line with its role as the Authority responsible for the Freeport.

Land Reclamation Project Aligns with Malta Vision 2050

During a visit by a delegation including Alex Agius Saliba, Member of the European Parliament and Deputy Leader for Party Affairs, Alex Muscat, Parliamentary Secretary, Chris Agius, Government Whip, as well as officials Leonid McKay and Cressida Galea, as part of ongoing consultations on Malta Vision 2050, the Malta Freeport Corporation highlighted its ongoing investments aimed at strengthening the port’s competitiveness and contribution to the national economy.

Chief Executive Officer David Magro outlined the Corporation’s flagship project currently underway; a multi-million-euro land reclamation initiative to extend Terminal 2. The project will create approximately 30,000 square metres of additional operational space, enabling the Freeport to accommodate larger vessels and increase container storage capacity, while generating around 165 new jobs.

Mr Magro emphasised that this project is fully aligned with the objectives of Malta Vision 2050, particularly the pillar focusing on the smart use of land and sea resources. He explained that the reclamation works are being carried out in line with environmental regulations, using inert construction material, with around one million tonnes required to complete the project.

He further noted that this investment forms part of the Corporation’s long-term strategy to enhance operational efficiency and sustain Malta’s position as a key transshipment hub in the region.

Over the past 13 years, the Malta Freeport Corporation has also generated approximately €125 million in contributions to the Consolidated Fund, reflecting its strong financial and economic performance.

Malta Freeport Corporation Commemorates €1,000 Donation

Today, staff members of Malta Freeport Corporation met Ms Sina Bugeja, Chairperson of the Board of Administrators of the Malta Community Chest Fund, and Mr Mark Mizzi, Chief Financial Officer (CFO), to commemorate a €1,000 donation in support of the Fund.

Throughout the year, the Administration Department, comprising 13 employees, organises various initiatives, with all proceeds donated to this worthy cause. Last year, €450 was raised, and the Corporation rounded up the total to €1,000. This year, the team is confident of exceeding this contribution and continuing to support the community.

Malta Freeport Hosts Regatta Prize-Giving Ceremony

The Yachting Malta BSC International Regatta concluded after four days of competitive racing in varied and at times demanding conditions, ranging from light tactical winds to strong gusts reaching 29 knots. The Race Committee delivered a well-managed and safe event, completing ten races for both the ILCA and Optimist classes. Sunday’s champagne sailing conditions stood out as a highlight, with close racing across all fleets and sailors competing fiercely through to the final finish.

The regatta concluded with an awards ceremony held at the Malta Freeport car park, where a representative of Malta Freeport Corporation presented the trophies to the winners. The event once again reflected the Corporation’s ongoing commitment to supporting sailing and sporting initiatives within the local community.

Building the Mediterranean Port of Tomorrow

In February David Magro, new MEDports President and CEO of the Malta Freeport Corporation attended the MEDports Sustainable Business Development Meeting, which was held at Marseille Port, in Marseille. This was his first official speech as President, in which he mentioned three dominant challenges that ports are facing, such as, the Presence of Tariffs we are experiencing in the everyday’ s life, Regional conflicts and last but not least, Climate Change. He mentioned also the Investments in Mediterranean ports.All ports are investing money in development projects, such as new machinery, land reclamation, ecological transition and decarbonization. He emphasised the importance of MEDports, where port’s objective is to aim to improve service quality, secure access to strategic gateways and support the transition to greener and more sustainable ports David Magro attended also a working session, titled ‘Energy Ports – challenges for MED ports’ as a speaker. Here he mentioned the projects Malta Freeport Corporation has in the pipeline.

Malta Freeport Corporation Welcomes U.S. Delegation

Malta Freeport Corporation had the pleasure of welcoming Her Excellency Ambassador Somers Farkas, together with senior officials from the U.S. Embassy and U.S. Customs and Border Protection, for an official visit to the Malta Freeport.
The visit commenced with a meeting at the Malta Freeport Corporation boardroom, bringing together the Corporation’s senior management team, where CEO David Magro introduced his management team and presented the Malta Freeport corporate video, offering an overview of the company’s operations and strategic role in global trade. This was followed by an in-depth discussion on the terminal’s functions, infrastructure, and future development.
A dedicated session with the Chief Security Officer highlighted Malta Freeport’s critical role in port security and international cooperation. The exchange proved highly constructive, identifying potential areas of collaboration between Malta Freeport and the U.S. authorities.
The delegation was then taken on a guided tour of the terminal, providing first-hand insight into daily operations, before concluding the visit with a meeting with Customs officials.
The visit reaffirmed Malta Freeport’s commitment to international partnership, transparency, and the highest standards of security and operational excellence.

A delegation from Malta Freeport Corporation, led by CEO Mr. David Magro, recently visited Hainan Province, China, to explore opportunities for international collaboration in maritime logistics and free trade development. The visit included high-level engagements with Chinese government officials, port authorities, and stakeholders, with a focus on the Yangpu Economic Zone and Hainan Free Trade Port. Mr. Magro delivered a well-received presentation, highlighting Malta’s strategic role in the Mediterranean and future investment plans under Malta Vision 2050. Discussions also advanced the finalization of a Memorandum of Understanding with Hainan Province, reinforcing Malta Freeport’s commitment to fostering global partnerships.

Official Visit by Mr. Yijun Peng, Chargé d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy.

Malta Freeport was delighted to welcome Mr. Yijun Peng, Chargé d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Malta, on an official visit. He was greeted by Malta Freeport Corporation CEO Mr. David Magro and Malta Freeport Terminals CEO Mr. Alex Montebello, together with officials from the Ministry for Economy and the Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs.

The visit kicked off with a presentation showcasing Malta Freeport’s facilities and projects. Mr. Peng showed great interest in the Envision 2050 plan, which sets out Malta Freeport’s vision for the future.

The tour continued with a visit around the terminal, where Mr. Peng could see the progress of the squaring off project, the OPS Project as well as day-to-day operational activities at Terminal Two North Quay.

At the end of his visit, Mr. Peng wished Malta Freeport every success for the future.

Squaring-Off Project Visit by the Prime Minister and Cabinet Ministers

Malta Freeport welcomed Prime Minister Robert Abela, accompanied by Minister for the Economy Silvio Schembri, Minister for Transport Chris Bonett, the Heads of Secretariat, and the Permanent Secretaries, for a visit highlighting the Squaring-Off project. The Prime Minister was greeted by David Magro Malta, the CEO of the Freeport Corporation. The delegation was shown around the Authority's offices and introduced to the administration Team.

A short meeting was held at the CEO's office during which the Prime Minister was given a summary of the ongoing projects within Malta Freeport. The Prime Minister and Ministers were then escorted to Malta Freeport Terminals Main office, where they were welcomed by CEO Alex Montebello, who introduced them to the terminal staff. At the penthouse, the delegation enjoyed a bird's-eye view of the terminal, its operations, and ongoing projects, including the OPS and the car park.

The delegation was also introduced to the state-of-the-art crane simulator, which provides safe, advanced training for both new recruits and existing employees. The visit concluded with a tour of the terminal site, where the Prime Minister and ministers observed first-hand the progress of the Squaring-Off project.

Visit by Head of Libya's Reconstruction and Development Fund to Malta Freeport

Malta Freeport recently had the honour of welcoming Engineer Belqassim Haftar, Head of the Reconstruction and Development Fund in Eastern Libya, for an official visit to the terminal.

Eng. Haftar and his accompanying delegation were welcomed by Malta Freeport Authority CEO, David Magro, and Malta Freeport Terminals CEO, Alex Montebello. During the visit, Mr. Montebello delivered a detailed presentation outlining the Freeport’s core operations and ongoing development projects. Special emphasis was given to key initiatives such as the squaring off of the terminal, optimisation of operations (OPS), and the electrification of the quays, which form part of Malta Freeport’s commitment to enhancing sustainability and operational efficiency.

Following the presentation, the Libyan delegation was given a comprehensive tour of the Freeport’s facilities, providing them with first-hand insight into the terminal’s activities and the major infrastructural works currently underway.

The visit was coordinated in collaboration with Malta’s Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade. The Permanent Secretary, Mr. Christopher Cutajar, accompanied the delegation throughout the visit.

Malta Freeport looks forward to continuing its strong relationship with Libya and exploring potential areas of collaboration to support economic growth and development in the region.

Malta Freeport Corporation at MEDPorts Forum 2025 in Tangier

Malta Freeport Corporation attended to the Medports General Assembly held at Tangier Morocco. The event brought together key industry leaders to discuss sustainability, resilience, and cooperation across Mediterranean ports.

Mr. Magro highlighted Malta’s efforts in meeting new environmental regulations, including the EU Emissions Trading System and the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Directive. He also outlined major sustainability projects at the Freeport, such as high-voltage shore connections and a €56 million terminal extension to reduce environmental impact and support LNG-fueled vessels.

During the forum, the confirmation of the headposts of the MEDPorts Association was announced.

Malta’s participation reaffirmed its commitment to a greener, more sustainable future for the region’s maritime sector.

Malta Freeport Sponsors Down-The-Line Shooting Competition

As part of its ongoing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme, Malta Freeport Corporation proudly sponsored the Down-The-Line (DTL) Shooting Competition held on Sunday, 1st June 2025 at the Halfar Shooting Range. The event, contested on 100 clays as part of the national selection series, attracted top shooters from across Malta and was marked by high levels of skill and sportsmanship. Sponsorship for the event was made possible through a joint CSR fund managed by Malta Freeport Corporation and Malta Freeport Terminals, demonstrating the Freeport’s unified commitment to supporting local communities and sporting events. Trophies and prizes were presented by Charmaine Felice, representing Malta Freeport Corporation. The overall winner of the competition was Silvio Calleja, who delivered an impressive performance throughout the day Malta Freeport is proud to continue investing in initiatives that promote sporting excellence and community engagement across the island.

Malta Freeport Supports The Island Games' - Europe's first international functional fitness festival and competition

Malta Freeport is proud to support The Island Games through a financial sponsorship, reinforcing our commitment to community well-being and promoting Malta as the Mediterranean’s leading fitness destination.

Taking place in Pretty Bay, Birzebbuga, on the 9th, 10th, and 11th of May 2025, this exciting event marks Europe’s first international functional fitness festival and competition. Over 400 athletes of varying fitness levels will compete in teams of four, completing a series of dynamic workouts across three action-packed days.

The event will also feature more than 100 volunteers and spectators, creating a vibrant and supportive atmosphere. Attendees can look forward to a lively experience with a live DJ, delicious food and drinks, and a variety of vendor stalls – making it an enjoyable weekend for athletes and visitors.

Mr. Mifsud was welcomed by the Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Magro who briefed him on ongoing matters and projects within Malta Freeport. Later, Mr. Mifsud was introduced to the Corporation’s senior Management team. During the meeting with the Management, Mr. Mifsud was provided with a concise overview of their roles and responsibilities.

St' Margaret College Verdala Secondary Cospicua visit to the Malta Freeport

After the success of the previous visit, St. Margaret College, Verdala Cospicua Secondary School, once again requested to visit Malta Freeport as part of their Social Studies syllabus. Today, with great pride, Malta Freeport Corporation hosted the Level 10 students. During the visit, the students were provided with information about the cultural background of the Freeport, its strategic location, and the unique advantage of it being a natural port rather than a man-made one.

It was also explained the role of the Freeport Corporation and distinguished it from the Malta Freeport Terminals, the operator. Additionally, the students were given an overview of other key stakeholders operating in the area, including EVOS, Medserv, and Malta Fish Farms. The students were also briefed on the Onshore Power Supply project, which is co-funded by the EU under the 'Just Transition Fund'.Once operational, it will bring significant benefits to the residents of Birżebbuġia by reducing noise pollution from berthed vessels and reducing air emissions.

They were also briefed about the Car park project and Squaring Off Project, highlighting the numerous benefits these initiatives bring. Malta Freeport Terminals delivered a presentation on the Freeport's daily operations and highlighted the investments made over the years to enhance its capabilities. Additionally, a customs official provided a detailed explanation of their day-to-day responsibilities, giving the students a comprehensive understanding of their critical role within the Freeport.

Shore to Ship Leadership Conference, Malta Addressing Decarbonization Leadership in Maritime Industry

The Shore to Ship Leadership Conference is a premier international event focused on the leadership challenges of decarbonizing the maritime industry. Held in Malta from the 7th to the 8th of November 2024, the conference brought together global leaders, industry experts, policymakers, and innovators to shape the future of sustainable shipping. On the first day, the event took place at Valletta’s Grand Harbour, while the second day was hosted by the Malta Freeport Corporation. Throughout both days, participants engaged in dynamic discussions and workshops covering a range of topics essential to the advancement of greener, more sustainable maritime practices. A highlight of the final day was the celebration of EOPSA’s expansion, as Malta Freeport Corporation and Maritime MT officially joined the European Onshore Power Supply Association (EOPSA). This membership marks a crucial step forward, reinforcing Europe’s commitment to cleaner shores and greener shipping.
