Malta Freeport Terminal

Malta Freeport Terminals is a state-of-the-art container facility strategically located at the heart of key global shipping lanes, positioning it as a vital transhipment hub in the Mediterranean. With over three decades of industry experience, the terminal has built a strong reputation for reliability, efficiency, and high-performance service among the world’s leading shipping lines.

More than 96% of the terminal’s container volume is transhipment traffic, reflecting its strategic importance in regional and global trade. In 2024 alone, Malta Freeport handled 2.86 million TEUs across 1,564 vessel calls, reinforcing its status as one of the busiest and most efficient ports in the region.

Privatised in 2004, Malta Freeport is now jointly owned by Terminal Link (a joint venture between CMA CGM with 51% and China Merchants Port Holdings with 49%) and Yilport Holding Inc. This strong shareholder base has underpinned an ambitious €395 million investment programme focused on infrastructure, advanced equipment, digitalisation, and workforce development, enhancing both capacity and environmental sustainability.

As a result of this strategic investment, Malta Freeport can handle the world’s largest container vessels, including ships exceeding 23,000 TEUs. Six megamax quay cranes allow the terminal to operate at the highest level, with the ability to stack 11 containers high and 25 across. The terminal features 2,463 metres of operational deep-water quays, a container storage area of 771,000 square metres, and an operational yard capacity of 45,000 TEUs. It is equipped with 20 quayside cranes, 60 rubber-tyred gantry cranes, and 2,180 reefer slots. The current annual capacity of 3.6 million TEUs will increase to 4 million with the completion of the Terminal Two Squaring Off Project.

This major expansion, Malta Freeport’s first in two decades, extends the North Quay at Terminal Two by 176 metres to a total of 688 metres, and the West Quay by 195 metres to a total of 313 metres. The terminal will be equipped with two additional megamax cranes bringing the total to seven on the North Quay. These enhancements will allow the terminal to accommodate container vessels with capacities exceeding 24,000 TEUs, while also improving operational efficiency and vessel turnaround times.
