Land Reclamation Project Aligns with Malta Vision 2050
During a visit by a delegation including Alex Agius Saliba, Member of the European Parliament and Deputy Leader for Party Affairs, Alex Muscat, Parliamentary Secretary, Chris Agius, Government Whip, as well as officials Leonid McKay and Cressida Galea, as part of ongoing consultations on Malta Vision 2050, the Malta Freeport Corporation highlighted its ongoing investments aimed at strengthening the port’s competitiveness and contribution to the national economy.
Chief Executive Officer David Magro outlined the Corporation’s flagship project currently underway; a multi-million-euro land reclamation initiative to extend Terminal 2. The project will create approximately 30,000 square metres of additional operational space, enabling the Freeport to accommodate larger vessels and increase container storage capacity, while generating around 165 new jobs.
Mr Magro emphasised that this project is fully aligned with the objectives of Malta Vision 2050, particularly the pillar focusing on the smart use of land and sea resources. He explained that the reclamation works are being carried out in line with environmental regulations, using inert construction material, with around one million tonnes required to complete the project.
He further noted that this investment forms part of the Corporation’s long-term strategy to enhance operational efficiency and sustain Malta’s position as a key transshipment hub in the region.
Over the past 13 years, the Malta Freeport Corporation has also generated approximately €125 million in contributions to the Consolidated Fund, reflecting its strong financial and economic performance.
