Multi Storey Carpark

Malta Freeport Corporation has invested €3 million in a new 400-space multi-storey car park to ease congestion, improve safety, and reduce pollution in Birżebbuġa. Inaugurated in February 2024, the facility has been leased to the Birżebbuġia Local Council for a symbolic €10 per year and includes a free multipurpose room for community use. This project reflects the Corporation’s commitment to sustainability, mobility, and social wellbeing.

Squaring Off Project

Terminal 2 at Malta Freeport, Port of Marsaxlokk
The Squaring Off project at Terminal 2 of Malta Freeport in the Port of Marsaxlokk is a major development aimed at boosting the port’s capacity and competitiveness. By extending the terminal area by 33,000 square metres, the project creates more space to handle today’s larger, high-capacity container ships—measured in Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEU). These modern vessels carry more cargo than ever before, and this expansion ensures the Freeport is fully equipped to meet the growing demands of global trade. With improved berthing space and greater operational flexibility, the Squaring Off project strengthens Malta Freeport’s role as a key hub in the Mediterranean, supporting both the local economy and international shipping.

High Voltage Connection Phase 1 at Malta Freeport

The High Voltage Shore Connection (HVSC) Phase 1 project at Terminal 1 North Quay and Terminal 2 North Quay of the Malta Freeport in the Port of Marsaxlokk marks a major step forward in sustainable port operations. This initiative allows berthed ships to switch off their engines and connect to shore-side electricity, significantly reducing harmful emissions and noise pollution. As a result, the air quality in surrounding communities improves, and the environmental impact of port activity is reduced. The system also boosts energy efficiency and helps Malta meet international environmental standards. With this upgrade, the Freeport is modernising its infrastructure while reinforcing its commitment to cleaner, greener maritime operations.
